Playstation To Double Down On Astro Bot After Success

Kill the enemy train and pop the hourglass open to get the second puzzle piece. The first puzzle piece in “Trapped In Time” appears before you even land in the hourglass. As you’re flying in on your DualSense ship, you’ll pass some coin containers and then a large sand dune on your left. On this sand dune, you’ll see a golden snake with a familiar glow emerge as you get close. Hit the snake with your ship and it’ll release the puzzle piece ahead of you.

When the PS5 launched, it included a free game called Astro’s Playroom. The short adventure worked as an effective tech demo, starring Astro, for the PS5’s multifaceted (and heavily underutilized) DuelSense controller. It also provided a look back at previous PlayStation releases, including beloved characters and hardware of varying popularity. Astro Bot is also meant to be a DualSense showcase, and it certainly does a lot there, though I continue to feel like the controller’s most passionate fans are within the company itself. In the few instances where the hero isn’t wearing an ability, the game still finds ways to reinvent itself. But once that awesome level was finished, I never saw the mechanic used again.

Astro Bot

While the bulk of time will be spent hunting down every collectible and bot, as there are 304 of them at the time of this review, Astro Bot is roughly around 10 hours in length for a standard playthrough. Personally, that length worked well to not overstay its welcome or feel padded, especially as additional content like time trials is set to release for free. Astro’s Playroom, a game bundled in with every PS5 is approximately 3 hours long, and many spent double or triple in that world just exploring and attempting to beat other player’s times at each level. Given the robust nature of what Astro Bot offers here, I could see many spending dozens of hours once that time trial mode is released. F168 s not the largest game in the world — you’ll perhaps see the credits roll in hours or so. Those aiming to rescue every robot, complete every challenge, find every jigsaw piece and unlock every trophy, however, will probably end up playing for around 20 hours or more.

Astro Bot Tentacle System Rescued Bots

Reviewers marveled at its creative platforming, its level of challenge, and its relentless nostalgia for 30 years of PlayStation hits. The only major issue most critics reported was that the game was too short – they didn’t want Astro Bot to end. Climb up the snowball, pull the wire, and activate the vacuum device. Suck up all the ice blocks and head inside the tropical oasis to find the disco ball. Activate it to use the secret exit and unlock the Turtles in Trash level in the Lost Galaxy.

It only really has a few universal mechanics to learn, and most of the game will have you interact with the stage gimmicks for the most part. Where it shines is the game’s level designs, unique gimmicks, and usage of everything the PS5 has to offer. It’s been quite a rough few weeks for Sony and PlayStation fans out there, and it’s great to know that it’s not all doom and gloom as Astro Bot is here to save the day. As a casual fan of platformers, Astro Bot blew me away and reminded me of the nostalgia and fun that is to be had with the genre. The last time to do this was Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey, which is a very high standard to beat or match in recent years.

None of that affects Astro Bot’s quality as a game but it does limit its successfulness as a nostalgia piece. Although it does rally at the end, with a wonderful on-rails section that is more reminiscent of the tone in Astro’s Playroom. Perhaps there is some sort of museum archive if you 100% the game but for the vast majority of players, they’ll have no idea who most of the characters are. If we don’t know then we’re sure more casual gamers are going to be even more lost, especially as so many of them look like generic anime characters. What’s most impressive, on a technical level, is the game’s use of force feedback. Surprisingly, the haptic feedback on the shoulder buttons, which was so impressive in Astro’s Playroom, isn’t emphasised but the audio and rumble design is the best we’ve ever seen in a video game.

We’ve discussed that in a separate boxout, because none of that affects the game, but it is all very odd – and gives the distinct impression it was shoehorned in halfway through development. There are much more difficult optional levels – a set based around the face button symbols being the hardest – but these are all quite short and completely linear, with no checkpoints. They’re reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine void levels but it’s a shame none of the normal levels also offer an increased challenge. The most interesting though is probably the one that shrinks you down to the size of a mouse, allowing you to explore levels at two different sizes.

And while there’s nothing to quite rival the GPU earworm of four years ago (despite the best efforts of a giant singing tree), the music is a consistent delight throughout. Here are the games released during 2025 that have won major industry awards or received nominations for those awards. We’ll update our awards tracker whenever new awards and nominations are announced. Customers praise the game’s quality, describing it as a champion of platforming games and one customer noting it’s the best arcade-meets-open world-chapter experience. Even a project by Behaviour the Dead by Daylight devs (me I know fro Scaler/Wet) had a car in some sci-fi worlds. The fact things are so simple these days that that’s amazing because realism/simplicity of using things. @Quintumply Are the secret stages/hidden levels required to get the platinum? I am just curious if there’s a steep difficulty barrier to get the platinum. I consider myself a decent platforming player, but I know my limits on having perfect reaction timing. The mothership — a PS5, finally filling a role it’s always looked designed to play — crash lands on a desert world at the centre of several nearby galaxies.

Trunk Of Funk Bot Locations

To do so, players will need to find and crash into the floating planet with the Christmas hat. Players will be able to find a Puzzle Piece floating around in space in the Tentacle System, Serpent Starway, Camo Cosmos, and Feather Cluster galaxies. Crash Site serves as a kind of hub world, in which players can find 35 Bots and 11 Puzzle Pieces. Like many of PlayStation’s limited edition DualSense controllers, the Astro Bot DualSense is based on one of its many franchises, specifically 2024’s Game of the Year, Astro Bot. The controller features a white and blue trim that perfectly matches the Dual Speeder in-game, as well as a smiling set of eyes on the touchpad. Sony just never seemed to have an answer to Nintendo’s Mario or Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog.

The whole aesthetic and atmosphere of the game are enhanced by its distinct and recognizable designs. To add to this, the game’s callbacks to its older and other IPs by integrating character designs into Astro Bot are amazing as well, since they’re instantly recognizable the moment you see them. The animations are also a work of art since they took time to make unique interactions for the special bots.
